Hell in India: Pharmaceutical Factory Explosion Kills 36, Dozens Injured!
A disaster rocked the southern Indian state of Telangana on Monday when a massive explosion followed by a fire tore through a pharmaceutical factory owned by Sigachi Industries. The death toll has climbed to at least 36, with around thirty workers seriously injured.
Firefighters found 34 charred bodies at the scene, while two more succumbed to severe burns in hospital. The entire factory structure collapsed. The fire has been extinguished, but debris removal is ongoing. The blast occurred in a spray-drying unit used to process raw materials into fine powder for drug production.
Witnesses reported hearing the explosion from several kilometers away. Due to the severe damage to the bodies, a special medical team is conducting DNA analyses to identify the victims. The state government has formed a commission to investigate the cause of the tragedy.
India is a global pharmaceutical powerhouse, known for producing generic drugs and vaccines thanks to its robust manufacturing infrastructure and low costs. However, industrial accidents, especially in chemical plants, are not uncommon, highlighting the urgent need for stricter safety protocols and oversight in this critical public health sector.
Sigachi Industries Limited is an Indian company with five manufacturing plants across the country and subsidiaries in the USA and UAE, specializing in active pharmaceutical ingredients and intermediates.
This tragedy casts a dark shadow over an industry vital to global health. Will anything change, or will workers continue to perish in flames due to inadequate safety measures?
