Police Shine at Protests Amidst a Divided Nation: Is Peace Really Preserved?

When the police shine and the nation divides – that’s the scene from protests shaking Belgrade! Political science professor Milan Petričković doesn’t hold back: the police reacted excellently, but danger lurks as soon as the crowd loses control. “It’s dangerous when chaos starts and the crowd swells,” warns Petričković, while noting a deep division in society.

The protests, he says, gained adrenaline but also danger – stones and blockades are not signs of dialogue but signs that something has broken. The symbolism of Vidovdan, meant to unite, turned into a scene of abuse of tradition and culture, adding fuel to the fire.

The blockers, those rebellious extremists, feel disappointed by the small turnout but that doesn’t stop them from trying to impose their radical ideas and anarchy. “The psychology of the crowd is dangerous – when people unite in a group, they lose control and do things they normally wouldn’t,” explains Petričković.

And while the protest energy spins in circles, the question remains: is peace really preserved or just an illusion? The police are on top of their game, but society is divided like never before. If you think this is the end of the story, think again – the real drama is just beginning. So, what do you think? Is this just the start of a bigger conflict or will things calm down?
