Popšica: Serbia’s Hidden Paradise at Risk of Losing Its Soul

Imagine a place in Serbia, hidden away from the city noise and crowds, where nature still reigns supreme, and the water in a thermal pool stays at a steady 22 degrees Celsius all year round. This is the village of Popšica, just 25 kilometers from Niš and 20 from Svrljig, which until recently was known only to locals and a few adventurous travelers. But now, thanks to travel blogger Aleksandra Didić, who shared her impressions and videos from this spot, Popšica is slowly becoming the new favorite getaway for those fleeing the urban hustle.

The natural pool with thermal spring water is a true oasis – the water is crystal clear and flowing, meaning it doesn’t get dirty easily. Next to the pool, there’s a drinking water spring that helps with stomach issues. The road to the pool is good, parking is available, and visitors are encouraged to bring their own food, drinks, and good vibes. Aleksandra is thrilled and already planning to return as soon as the sun warms up.

But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. While some welcome the discovery of this natural gem with open arms, others are worried. Locals who have been coming here for years fear that mass tourism will destroy what makes this place special. “Please don’t take pictures or advertise our southern treasure, we don’t want it to be ruined,” write concerned users on social media.

On the other hand, some believe that more visitors are exactly what the village needs to develop tourism and its economy, which until now has been mostly focused on agriculture with few other income sources. Will Popšica manage to keep its authenticity and peace, or will it become just another overcrowded tourist spot filled with people and trash? Only time will tell. It all depends on us – the visitors and those who care about this place.

If you’ve ever dreamed of escaping to untouched nature, Popšica should be on your radar. But remember – nature isn’t endless, and if we’re not careful, soon we’ll lose these kinds of oases. So, what do you think? Should we protect these hidden gems or let tourism swallow them whole? Drop a comment, share your thoughts, and maybe together we can find a way to save Popšica!
