This morning, a fire broke out at the Jovanovac city dump in Kragujevac, engulfing about four hectares of waste. Firefighters responded swiftly with 25 firefighters and 10 vehicles, aided by machinery from the public utility company Šumadija and other firms, managing to bring the fire under control by noon. Extinguishing the fire was complicated by burning plastic and accumulated garbage. The city authorities denied rumors of explosions spreading on social media, calling them misinformation causing unnecessary panic. The head of the Emergency Situations Administration of the Kragujevac Police, Zoran Kočović, confirmed there were no casualties or threats to residential buildings. Residents near the dump were advised to wear masks and keep windows closed due to smoke and unpleasant odors. Machinery, including 30 dump trucks from the northern bypass construction, is delivering earth to cover the fire-affected area. The cause of the fire will be determined later. This situation highlights how city dumps remain problematic spots for the environment and public health, while panic and misinformation only make things worse. If you’re nearby, better not to breathe deeply and follow only official information. So, what do you think about these fires and how cities fight them?
