Welcome to the land where violence is a virtue and victims are turned into perpetrators! Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has flipped the narrative upside down with his pardons and statements. Instead of protecting victims, he protects violent offenders – those who brutally beat students with baseball bats, broke a young woman’s jaw, and proudly call themselves heroes!
It all started when four young men from the SNS party attacked students in Novi Sad. Although Prime Minister Miloš Vučević resigned over the incident, pro-government media and Vučić himself began to whitewash the attackers. “The guys were just defending party premises,” Vučić claimed, while tabloids wrote that “four innocent young men are rotting in jail.”
After three of the attackers were released from custody and the fourth placed under house arrest, the president pardoned these “heroes” in July. The case against them was dropped, and Vučić portrayed them as victims, while labeling the beaten students as heartless culprits.
But that’s not all! Vučić also announced a pardon for Milica S., who during a traffic blockade in New Belgrade seriously injured a student with her car. Although charged with attempted murder carrying a sentence of 10 or more years, the president is ready to pardon her if her family and she agree.
This policy sends a clear message: violence is acceptable if it comes from the “right side.” Victims become perpetrators, and perpetrators become heroes. Justice and law do not apply to the politically favored.
Human rights and anti-corruption organizations warn that such pardons pose legal and moral problems and call on Vučić not to pardon innocent citizens who are victims of violent blockades.
This is not just a story of isolated cases – it is systemic normalization of violence and abuse of the judicial system for political purposes. If you think justice is blind, think again. In Serbia, it clearly serves only those in power.
What do you think about this absurd situation? Has violence really become the new norm? Share your thoughts, maybe together we can find a way out of this mess!
