Protecting Sinjajevina: Mountain or Military Polygon? The Battle for Montenegro’s Soul

Sinjajevina, a majestic mountain rich with 56 species of plants and animals, 40 of which exist nowhere else outside the Balkans, is back in the spotlight. Damjan Ćulafić, a prominent advocate for ecology and sustainable development, makes it clear: Sinjajevina is not just a place, it’s a way of life! But imagine all of this disappearing under the pressure of a military polygon and the noise of traffic. Will we allow this oasis of silence and natural beauty to turn into a zone of conflict and destruction?

Ćulafić thanked the locals who have protected the mountain for centuries and praised the courage of the government that proposed to revoke the decision to turn Sinjajevina into a military polygon. This is the first step towards placing the area under a special protection regime, which would finally preserve this natural gem. But true protection doesn’t mean closing the mountain and driving people away; it means living in harmony with nature, as the ancestors did.

The civic initiative “Save Sinjajevina,” together with the international organization International Land Coalition, organized an educational and recreational camp where young people are already showing they are ready to be leaders in preserving this space. They use drones, recognize medicinal plants, and write appeals to save the mountain.

This fight is not only ecological but also social and cultural. Sinjajevina is home to people, plants, animals, and legends. If we allow it to become a military polygon, we will lose a part of our soul. That’s why it’s important for everyone to understand that preserving Sinjajevina is our duty and an opportunity to show how to protect nature and tradition.

What about you? Are you for keeping Sinjajevina untouched, or do you think the military polygon is inevitable? Drop a comment, share your story, or just say what you think — this mountain deserves the voices of all of us!
