Sanctions on Russia or Forget the EU!
The Movement of Free Citizens (PSG) couldn’t be clearer: Serbia must impose sanctions on Russia, and it must do it now! Why? Because without sanctions, there is no real EU membership. PSG claims that Serbia’s misalignment with the EU’s foreign policy has been a stumbling block on its path to Brussels for years.
Serbia, according to PSG, is stuck in place because it refuses to sanction Russia, pushing itself further away from EU membership. The European Union has just adopted its 18th package of sanctions against Russia, yet Serbia continues to pretend everything is fine.
Why does this matter? Because without sanctions, there’s no opening or closing of negotiation clusters, which are crucial for Serbia’s EU path. Without sanctions, there’s no real progress. Just empty words and declarations.
EU Still Walking Side by Side with Serbia
On the other hand, the outgoing EU ambassador to Serbia, Emanuele Giaufret, says the EU remains fully committed to Serbia and its path to membership. During farewell meetings with Serbia’s top officials, he highlighted visible progress and Serbia’s key role in shaping the future of the Western Balkans within the European family.
However, Giaufret does not mention sanctions on Russia as a condition, showing how sensitive and controversial the sanctions topic remains in Serbia.
What’s Going On?
On one side, PSG demands a clear and decisive policy – sanctions on Russia or nothing. On the other, the EU sends supportive messages but without pressure on sanctions. Serbia is at a crossroads, and political will for sanctions is missing.
This is a true Balkan drama: Serbia wants to join the EU but doesn’t want to upset Russia. PSG says – sanctions or nothing. The EU says – we’re here, but we won’t push too hard. And the people? They watch and wonder – where’s the end of this story?
Conclusion
If Serbia wants to seriously move toward the EU, it must make a choice. Sanctions on Russia are not just a political game – they are a key test of Serbia’s sincerity and readiness to become part of the European family. Without that, everything remains empty declarations and promises.
What do you think? Should Serbia impose sanctions on Russia and finally choose the EU, or is it better to stay the course and play both sides? Drop a comment, let’s see who’s for and who’s against! Let the debate heat up like a real Balkan kafana.
