Public Maritime Management Company: Finally Thrifty and Responsible!

Montenegro’s Public Maritime Management Company just pulled off a move that’s long overdue – for the first time in 33 years, they bought diving gear worth less than 20,000 euros and hired two certified divers. Why should you care? Because they decided to stop throwing money at expensive outside contractors and take underwater infrastructure maintenance into their own hands, especially in the Budva port, now back under state control. This move saves a boatload of cash and boosts public sector efficiency, but of course, it’s stirred up some unnecessary drama and negative chatter. Some folks just can’t handle the idea of a public company acting responsibly and managing resources like grown-ups.

For over three decades, this is the first time the company has its own trained diving crew. Instead of paying outside contractors sky-high fees, they’ll save significant money every year and strengthen independence and functionality in the public sector. This is a prime example of how state assets can be managed rationally and sustainably in the long run.

Sure, the diving gear cost less than 20,000 euros – a drop in the bucket for government spending – but the significance is huge. Public companies in Montenegro often get slammed for inefficiency and waste, but here’s proof things can change. The Public Maritime Management Company is no longer a cash cow for the favored few; it’s an institution protecting state resources and contributing to the budget.

Of course, there will always be naysayers who hate change, but this is the path forward – smart, responsible, and focused on saving money and improving efficiency. If you think this is just a small story about diving gear, think again – this is a fight for better, more accountable public administration in Montenegro. So, what do you think? Is this the beginning of the end for wasteful public spending, or just a drop in the ocean of problems? Drop a comment and let’s see who’s cheering and who’s jeering!
