Ukraine’s chances of joining NATO or getting nukes are low.

Special U.S. envoy Keith Kellogg stated that the chances of Ukraine joining NATO or obtaining nuclear weapons are “slim to none.” In 1994, Ukraine handed over its nuclear weapons to Russia in exchange for assurances of respect for its sovereignty. Kellogg emphasized that resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is in the interest of U.S. national security, but arming Ukraine with nuclear weapons is not an option. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukraine agreed to give up nuclear weapons.
