The Royal Show That Almost Didn’t Happen?
Did you know that one of the MOST LEGENDARY performances in music history, Queen’s Live Aid set in 1985, almost never saw the light of day? Yes, you read that right! Bob Geldof, the concert organizer, literally told Freddie Mercury, “Don’t get smart!” and tried to stop him from going on stage.
Why?
Geldof was skeptical about Queen performing, thinking they might be too “smart” or wouldn’t meet expectations. But as band members revealed, Brian May had to convince Geldof to give them a chance. And thank goodness he did!
The Show That Changed Everything
Queen performed just six songs, but that was enough to get the 72,000-strong Wembley crowd clapping as one. Their performance was later voted the greatest rock performance ever!
Frontman Freddie was in his element, rallying the crowd, and when they played “Radio Ga Ga,” the entire audience looked like one body swaying in rhythm.
Health Scares and Uncertainty
It wasn’t all smooth sailing – Brian May suffered a stroke and lost feeling in his hand, making things even tougher. Also, it wasn’t certain Queen would perform at all, and Freddie knew this was one of those rare moments in life when you do something truly important.
Coldplay and the Award of the Century
Interestingly, Coldplay, Chris Martin’s band, recently surpassed Queen in a music competition for the award of the century, sparking heated fan reactions. But no one can deny that Queen’s Live Aid performance remains an unmatched classic.
The Bottom Line
If it weren’t for the persuasion and courage of Queen’s members, we might never have witnessed this epic show. Bob Geldof may have been doubtful, but the audience and history proved Queen was the right choice for Live Aid.
If you thought organizing a concert with 50 bands in one place was easy, think again – it was a crazy idea for its time!
