The alliance of rebel groups in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has announced a unilateral ceasefire for “humanitarian reasons” after taking control of territory. According to UN data, at least 900 people have been killed, and 2,880 injured in the fighting in and around Goma. The rebel offensive has drawn condemnation from the G7 and the EU. The rebels accused the Congolese army of bombing and stated that they have no intention of occupying additional territory.
