The Regional Football League: Who’s Drawing Crowds and Who’s Left with Empty Stands?
Think all stadiums in the region are packed to the brim? Think again! Transfermarkt just dropped some cold, hard numbers on football match attendance across the region, and spoiler alert: it’s not looking great for most leagues except one.
HNL – The Attendance King
Croatia’s HNL is the undisputed champion when it comes to filling seats. On average, a whopping 5,000 fans show up per match! Yes, five thousand people per game. Hajduk leads the pack with a staggering average of 22,000 fans at Poljud this season. Dinamo Zagreb trails behind with nearly half that number, around 11,000, and Red Star Belgrade pulls in about 10,000 fans per match.
Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia – Second and Third Place
The Bosnian league holds second place with an average of 2,000 spectators per game, while the Serbian Superliga follows closely with slightly fewer, around 2,000. That’s almost half the attendance of Croatia, raising serious questions about football’s popularity in Serbia and Bosnia compared to Croatia.
Slovenia, Macedonia, and Montenegro – Bottom of the Barrel
Slovenia’s league ranks fourth with an average of 1,000 spectators, while Macedonia and Montenegro sit at the bottom with even fewer attendees. Montenegro’s league is dead last, with attendance numbers so low they’re almost negligible.
What Does This Mean?
These stats clearly show that football in Croatia is still alive and kicking, with fans passionately supporting their teams. Meanwhile, in Serbia, Bosnia, and especially Montenegro, football is struggling to capture the public’s attention. Is it the league quality, organization, or something else? Hard to say, but one thing’s clear: something’s gotta change if they want to bring fans back to the stands.
Most Watched Teams in the Region
- Hajduk (Poljud): 22,000 fans per match
- Dinamo Zagreb: 11,000
- Red Star Belgrade: 10,000
- Željezničar: 8,000
- Sarajevo: 6,000
These numbers speak for themselves. While Hajduk and Dinamo pack their stadiums, other clubs are fighting for every single fan.
The Bottom Line
If you thought football was the same everywhere in the region, think again. Croatia’s HNL dominates attendance, while other leagues desperately try to attract fans. The fans have spoken loud and clear about where the football passion truly burns.
