Niš on the Brink of a Water Disaster: Water Consumption Hits Record Highs, and Saving Measures Are Too Late!
Niš residents, brace yourselves – water from your taps might soon become a luxury! Niš’s mayor, Dragoslav Pavlović, openly admitted that the city’s water consumption has reached a record-breaking 1 liters per second, while the maximum water production is only 1 liters per second. Yes, you read that right – consumption exceeds production!
Water is flowing like there’s no tomorrow
At the end of June, water consumption was higher than in the same period last year, and by huge amounts. Pavlović appealed to citizens to use water rationally, reduce watering of gardens and lawns, and control uncontrolled water leaks. But will that be enough?
Emergency situation headquarters in action – but is it too late?
At today’s emergency situation headquarters meeting, an expert team was formed that will propose water-saving measures by Wednesday. Pavlović emphasized the need to preserve the capacities of lakes and the Medijana source, from which most of the city gets its drinking water. However, the Ljuberađa, Krupac, and Studeni sources are showing reduced yields – Ljuberađa currently has 40% less water than last summer.
Villages are fed up – water consumption is twice what the system can handle
Municipal inspections are already controlling consumption in rural households because water consumption in villages like Hotel “Nais,” Mezgraja, Sečanica, Supovac, Donja Trnava, Donja and Gornja Toponica is twice as high as the consumption of the entire Babušnica municipality, which has about ten thousand residents. The water supply system simply cannot withstand such pressure.
Farmers in a dilemma – water the gardens or watch crops perish?
We understand farmers who don’t want their crops to die due to extreme heat, but uncontrolled water consumption in villages further worsens the situation. The mayor clearly stated that solidarity and responsibility are necessary – water is not just a resource, it’s the future of Niš.
What’s next?
The emergency situation headquarters will make decisions that will apply throughout the summer. Restrictions on consumption and increased inspections are expected, especially in the evening hours when water use is highest. If you think this is just another city story, think again – water is our lifeblood, and Niš is on the verge of a heart attack.
Conclusion
Niš is in big trouble. Water consumption is out of control, and saving measures are coming just when it’s almost too late. Will citizens manage to seriously reduce consumption, or will we all watch water slowly slip through our fingers?
If you have your own water-saving tricks or think this is exaggerated, drop a comment below – maybe your idea will save Niš from a dry fate!
