Russia Holds 35,000 Ukrainian Children Hostage – Largest Child Abductions Since WWII!
Imagine the horror: around 35,000 Ukrainian children have gone missing since the start of the Russian invasion, with most believed to be on Russian territory or in occupied areas. This is not just war statistics – this is a massive child abduction operation happening right before our eyes, and Russia refuses to return them.
How Did the Children Disappear? Children have been taken from orphanages, battlefields after their parents’ deaths, and even directly from family homes – often by force. One mother rescued her two teenage sons from a Russian camp after nearly six months of detention, traveling alone through Russian checkpoints amid shelling to bring them home. But for most children, such a return is impossible.
Terrifying Conditions and Russification Children are forced to sing the Russian anthem, learn Russian, and undergo military training in camps. Speaking Ukrainian is punishable. Parents are threatened if children do not obey. This is a systematic campaign by the Russian state to turn children of Ukrainian origin into Russian children – a war crime under international law.
The Largest Child Abduction Since World War II A team of experts from Yale University estimates this is the largest child abduction in war since WWII, comparable to the Nazi Germanization of Polish children. So far, only 1 child has been returned or escaped back to Ukraine.
Disturbing Changes in Russian Laws Russia has changed laws to make it easier for Russian citizens to adopt Ukrainian children. If one parent remains in Ukraine and the other is in occupied territory or dies, the child may end up in a Russian orphanage, from which it is nearly impossible to bring them back.
International Response and Justice The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and his commissioner for children’s rights for this war crime. Ukraine demands the return of its children as a key condition in any peace negotiations.
Children as Hostages and Bargaining Chips Children are now used as hostages and leverage in negotiations. Russia initially planned to Russify them, but as the war dragged on, the children became tools of blackmail and political manipulation.
This tragedy is far from the media attention it deserves. While the world watches, thousands of Ukrainian children remain trapped in camps, orphanages, and Russian families, stripped of their homeland and identity.
