The Russian space agency Roscosmos attempted in 1993 to launch a mirror into orbit to reflect sunlight onto the dark areas of Siberia during winter. The Znamya project aimed to illuminate Arctic cities. The idea of space mirrors is not new; it was proposed by German physicist Hermann Oberth in 1923. During World War II, the Nazis developed the concept of a reflecting weapon, while in the 1970s, German engineer Kraft Ehricke proposed using mirrors for production.
Russia tried to use space mirrors for winter light.
