Safety on the Old Zagorje Road and Initiatives for Improvement

After four people died within a few days in traffic accidents on the old Zagorje road, citizens expressed anger and demand urgent measures to increase safety on this dangerous section connecting Zagorje and Zagreb. The main cause of accidents is improper overtaking, and the problem is worsened by many drivers avoiding toll payments on the A2 highway, overloading the old road. Civic initiatives call for more cameras, stricter speed limits, and lowering or abolishing tolls to relieve traffic. The Krapina-Zagorje County plans reconstruction and new traffic solutions, including a roundabout, and is ready to consider all constructive proposals to improve safety.

Political Perspectives:

Left: Left-leaning reports emphasize the need for government intervention to improve road safety, highlighting the social impact of traffic accidents on local communities and advocating for public investment in infrastructure and affordable toll policies to reduce the burden on the old road.

Center: Center-leaning coverage focuses on factual reporting of the accidents and the current state of the road, presenting statements from experts and officials about the causes and planned measures, including infrastructure upgrades and enforcement of traffic rules, without strong political bias.

Right: Right-leaning narratives stress personal responsibility of drivers, pointing to reckless driving and illegal overtaking as main causes, while also criticizing high toll fees on the highway that push drivers to use the old road. They advocate for reducing tolls and increasing law enforcement rather than heavy government spending.
