Billions for Local Governments in Serbia – Real Help or Political Theater?
In July 2023, Serbia signed agreements to allocate a whopping 3.626 billion dinars to local governments. Yes, you read that right – billions of dinars! But is this real help for citizens or just another political show?
Billions for Infrastructure and Digitalization
Snežana Paunović, the state secretary, proudly announced that the funds will be directed towards projects improving infrastructure, digitalizing administration, and providing better services at the local level. Investments have already started – from renovating schools and kindergartens to supporting sports and cultural events and purchasing state-of-the-art IT equipment. In one cycle alone, 18 local governments received over 43 million dinars for digitalization, while six municipalities got 26 million for cultural and sports events.
Is Everything Really That Great?
Paunović also addressed accusations of political misuse during her visit to Kosjerić, where she was allegedly accused of being part of a political campaign. However, she emphasized that the goal was to help children and improve playgrounds, which is certainly noble.
Awards for the Best Local Governments
Besides financial aid, awards were given to the best local governments in Serbia. Cities like Sokobanja, Zaječar, Veliko Gradište, and Raška were recognized for efficiency, transparency, responsibility, and equality. The prize fund was 7.4 million dinars, divided into four categories.
A Start of a Better Life or Just Another Show?
While the investments seem impressive, the question remains how much of these funds will actually reach the citizens and how successfully the projects will be implemented. Will digitalization and infrastructure truly improve the quality of life across Serbia, or will it remain just on paper?
