Welcome to Serbia’s traffic nightmare! Students and citizens have decided to block bridges, intersections, and main roads all over Serbia, and the police are not holding back in breaking up these blockades. It all started as a protest against the arrest of students suspected of planning a violent change to the constitutional order, and now it has escalated into full-blown chaos on the streets.
The blockades were everywhere – from Belgrade, through Novi Sad, to Kragujevac and other cities. Containers, fences, tents – all set up to stop traffic. Ambulances and other emergency services were at risk because they couldn’t get through. The Ministry of Health warned that such blockades could endanger citizens’ lives.
The police launched a crackdown early this morning, arresting multiple people. A total of 29 were detained for disturbing public order, and eight were arrested on suspicion of preparing attacks on state institutions and violent changes to the state order.
Students claim they won’t back down and have announced new gatherings. Citizens are divided – some support the blockades, others are furious about the chaos and traffic jams.
