Greece has always been a favorite destination for Serbian tourists, and Crete is one of the most visited islands. Long sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters lure vacationers, with Elafonisi being one of the most famous beaches on the island. However, Serbian tourists were shocked to discover that using the toilet on this beach costs a whopping 1 euro per person! For an average family of four, that means an extra 4 euros daily, which can add up to 40 euros in unexpected expenses over a ten-day holiday.
But wait, there’s more! Sunbeds and umbrellas on Elafonisi beach cost 20 euros for a set, and an additional sunbed is another 5 euros. Plus, getting to the beach by car or organized transport also comes with extra charges. Tourists are used to paying for sunbeds and umbrellas, but charging for toilet use is not common practice in Greece, so this new fee surprised and angered many.
At the beach entrance, there’s also a quirky warning: “Don’t take sand from the beach!” because, as they say, take memories, not sand. While the toilet fee is symbolic, cumulatively it can significantly strain tourists’ budgets. Serbs still don’t give up on Greece but wonder if this is the start of a new trend toward pricier vacations.
