Looks like the political soap opera in Pristina has hit a new high! The session of the Kosovo parliament, which was supposed to be the constitutive one and finally elect the speaker, was interrupted as if it were some reality show, not serious business. The leader of the Self-Determination Movement, Albin Kurti, is clearly unhappy with the situation and stated that the responsibility to constitute the assembly lies with all MPs, not just the top-ranking party. To make things even juicier, the candidate for speaker, Albulena Hadžiu, announced she would withdraw her candidacy if she doesn’t get the required 61 votes in a secret ballot. The secret ballot is supposed to clear things up but sparked criticism because some claim the proposal for secret voting was hidden or misinterpreted. The deputy leader of Self-Determination, Glauk Konjufca, defended the proposal and accused opponents of deliberately misreading the situation. Meanwhile, Kosovo’s Constitutional Court made it clear that the constitutive session must be completed within 30 days, adding pressure on the political players. The session was interrupted, with continuation scheduled for June 29 at 11 a.m. All in all, the political deadlock and disagreements in Pristina look set to drag on, and Kosovo’s citizens can only watch and wait for something to finally move. Got a good joke about politicians who can’t agree? Share it here — we could all use a laugh while waiting for the show to go on!
