While small hydropower plants in northern municipalities of Montenegro are drying up rivers and destroying flora and fauna, local communities get no benefits while tycoons fill their pockets! About a dozen small hydropower plants have completely dried up the beds of once-beautiful mountain rivers like Šekularska, leaving nature in agony. And who cares about the damage? Nobody! As water is collected in the plants, downstream riverbeds are almost completely dry. All this under the guise of development and sustainable tourism, while wealth flows into the hands of a privileged few. Is this the price we pay for ‘progress’? Comment and tell us – are small hydropower plants a salvation or an ecological disaster we keep silent about?
