The EU has released a report clearly indicating possible human rights violations in Gaza by Israel, yet nothing is being done! Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has raised his voice, calling the situation a genocide, but the rest of the EU sits idly by. Over 55 Palestinians have been killed in the last 18 months of Israeli bombardment of Gaza, and the EU refuses to suspend a crucial trade agreement with Israel, despite this being a clear breach of Article 2 of the agreement. While the EU has imposed 18 sanction packages against Russia for its aggression in Ukraine, it acts as if nothing is happening with Israel. Spain and Ireland are the only countries openly calling for suspension of the agreement, but this requires a unanimous decision of all 27 member states, which is impossible. Germany, Greece, Hungary, and others remain allies of Israel and reject sanctions. Berlin has clearly stated it will continue arms sales to Israel, despite Germany being one of the main suppliers. The EU report points to indiscriminate attacks on civilians, blockade of food and medicine, attacks on medical facilities, all potential human rights violations. Yet, the EU pretends not to see the genocide and takes no concrete action. The Spanish Prime Minister has bluntly stated that Europe is incapable of pressuring Israel due to its double standards. This situation is a disgrace for the EU and shows how the politics of a powerful ally outweigh human rights and justice. If you have thoughts on this hypocrisy, feel free to drop a comment—maybe someone will actually listen!
