SPC and its allies are playing a dirty game in Montenegro! While the world watches Ukraine, here the anti-fascist legacy is being erased, and the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) is rehabilitating the Chetnik movement as if they were heroes! Marko Banović from the Digital Forensics Center exposes how false narratives and historical revisionism are used to redefine Montenegro’s identity, pushing it into the embrace of Serbian nationalism and Russian imperialism. Yes, you read that right! While the Kremlin presents its aggression in Ukraine as a fight against fascism, the SPC is building an ideological bridge between Serbian nationalism and Russian imperial discourse — all under the guise of anti-fascism!
Banović warns that the goal of this dirty game is to marginalize authentic anti-fascism and portray Montenegro as a country born from communism, thereby denying its statehood and identity. This goes hand in hand with the strengthening of pro-Serbian and nationalist structures that care only about Serbia’s interests, not Montenegro’s. The result? Increasing social polarization and destabilization of the country.
Narratives glorifying war criminals like Draža Mihailović and Pavle Đurišić, while branding the partisan movement as criminal, are becoming everyday occurrences. At a recent gathering in Slovenia, attended by pro-Serbian politicians, SPC representatives, and far-right groups, it was clear how the rehabilitation of the Chetnik movement fits into Russian propaganda narratives. The memorial service for Draža Mihailović in Nikšić, attended by the Russian ambassador and local officials, is just the tip of the iceberg.
The worst part? Young people are the most vulnerable to these disinformation campaigns, which are fed to them through education, social media, and media controlled by the SPC and its allies. If these narratives continue, the collective consciousness of the youth will be shaped by propaganda, not truth and proven historical facts.
So, while the world fights real fascism, Montenegro is being fed a false narrative that serves to justify aggressive revisionist policies and erase history. Will anyone stop this madness before it’s too late? Or will we allow the truth about anti-fascism and Montenegro’s statehood to be lost forever in a fog of lies and manipulation?
