Kurti’s Bridges on the Ibar: New Source of Tension or Bridge to Peace?
The Serbian List has raised its voice and thrown down the gauntlet to the international community! In the past few days, on behalf of the Serbian people, they submitted a petition against the construction of two bridges over the Ibar River in Kosovska Mitrovica. Yes, you read that right — not one, but two bridges that Albin Kurti, acting Prime Minister of the provisional Pristina institutions, started building on July 1st.
Why all the fuss about the bridges?
These new bridges are not just ordinary crossings over a river. According to the Serbian List and the citizens of Kosovska Mitrovica, they are potential sources of new tensions and threats to the security of Serbs in northern Kosovo and Metohija. The main bridge in Mitrovica is closed to traffic and is under constant KFOR control, which already speaks volumes about the sensitivity of the situation.
The Serbian List claims these bridges won’t be bridges of connection but bridges of division. That’s why they launched a petition, which has already gathered a significant number of signatures, and plan to submit it to all important international representatives — from the USA, EU, Germany, France to Italy.
Kurti and his cornerstone laying
On July 1st, Kurti ceremoniously laid the cornerstone for the construction of the bridges. Is this an act of courage or provocation? For the Serbian List and many Serbs in the north, it’s a clear signal that Pristina is not backing down from its plans, regardless of local opposition.
International community on trial
The question now is — how will the international community react? Will they side with the Serbs and their justified fears or support Kurti’s plans? The Serbian List clearly states they will continue to pressure and inform international representatives about the Serbian people’s stance.
What do the citizens say?
The citizens of Kosovska Mitrovica are loud and clear — new bridges are not needed. They see these bridges as an additional reason for insecurity and a potential source of conflict. Will their voices be heard or ignored?
Conclusion: Bridges or barricades?
While Kurti builds bridges, Serbs in the north build walls of distrust. This situation is a perfect example of how infrastructure projects can become political bombs. Will these bridges truly connect people or just deepen the divide?
