State Gifts Property to Dubrovnik Diocese for Young Families: Housing Crisis or Political Move?

The state has decided to gift a property to the Dubrovnik Diocese, aiming to house young families after renovation. Deputy Prime Minister of Istria, Branko Bačić, met with Dubrovnik County Prefect Blaž Pezo and Mayor Mato Franković to discuss road infrastructure projects and housing solutions for protected tenants. State property authorities have announced a public call for contractors to renovate about ten apartments that will serve to house protected tenants. Additionally, there is an ongoing valuation of land at the Solitudo location, where the construction of three multi-apartment buildings is planned. The City of Dubrovnik has prepared the main project for building a kindergarten on the Komolac land, and the government has already allocated part of the parcels. The Deputy Prime Minister initiated all necessary procedures to resolve the land issue. County Prefect Blaž Pezo presented road infrastructure projects in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, including the construction of a fast road to Dubrovnik Airport and the Orebić bypass. Bačić highlighted that bids for the first two subsections are expected to open next week, something long awaited. He also met with Bishop Rok Glasnović, and the meeting’s topic was the donation of a property totaling 4,000 square meters to the Dubrovnik Diocese, which after renovation will be intended for young families, aiming to encourage renewal and the return of life to the city of Dubrovnik. This decision has sparked various reactions in the public, raising questions whether this is the right way to solve young people’s housing problems or a political game with the church.
