Storm in Serbia: Chaos on Roads and Dangers Lurking for Drivers

Are you ready to drive in Serbia after the storm? If you think it’s just a bit of rain and wind, think again! Yesterday’s summer storm hit most of Serbia and left chaos on the roads. New Belgrade streets are littered with fallen trees, while the Old Town is somewhat calmer. But don’t be fooled — dangers lurk everywhere!

Nevena Damjanović from AMSS warns that driving conditions are truly demanding. The worst spots are where dry roads meet wet ones — super slippery! Main roads, highways, and magistral roads are functioning but slowly and with caution. Especially risky are the sections through gorges and rocky cuts, like the Đerdap and Ibar magistral roads, where landslides and rockfalls are active after heavy rains.

Drivers, if you can, park your vehicles safely and wait for the storm to pass. On the highway, it’s best to stop at rest areas or gas stations. Traffic is heavier due to the summer season, and delays are caused by roadworks, so be patient.

Sremska Mitrovica fared better than nearby Šid, where a school roof even collapsed, and hail the size of a large hazelnut fell from the sky! Crop damage is still being assessed but thankfully isn’t severe. Still, caution is necessary as such storms can happen again.

So, if you thought driving in the rain was no big deal, think again! These storms are a real test for your nerves and skills. And if you have a crazy road story or saw something that doesn’t fit in a normal traffic report, feel free to share — maybe you’ll make us all laugh or warn us about another danger!
