Student Blockades and Arrests: Coup Attempt or Fight for Justice? Serbia is on fire with protests, and the student blockades are at the heart of it all. More than eight people have been arrested on suspicion of preparing a coup, including students from the Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering faculties in Belgrade. The accusations are serious: planning attacks on state institutions, blocking roads and critical infrastructure across the country, all aimed at violently changing the government. Is this really a coup attempt or just a crackdown on young voices demanding justice?
Protests have erupted across Serbia, with thousands of citizens blocking traffic in multiple cities including Belgrade and Novi Sad. Traffic on the Gazela Bridge and the M11 highway is completely halted. Students and citizens together demand accountability for the tragedy in Novi Sad, where 16 people died under a canopy at the railway station — an event that sparked months of blockades and protests.
Police and security services claim they acted professionally and within normal limits, preventing clashes between groups at the protests. However, students say they were victims of violence and were denied access to temporary hospitals for treating the injured. “An attack on one student is an attack on all of us,” they say, refusing to back down from their demands.
While authorities call for order and peace, students and their supporters are not giving up. They demand the dissolution of parliament and early elections, with a deadline looming. This all resembles a classic battle between the establishment and youth seeking change, as well as the danger of abusing state institutions to suppress protests.
If you think this is just another political drama, think again. This situation is much more. It’s a test of democracy, freedom of expression, and the right to protest. And you? Are you on the students’ side or the authorities’? Or somewhere in between? Drop a comment, share your thoughts, and remember — the real revolution starts with a conversation!
