Student Blockades in Serbia: Street Revolution or Endless Chaos?

Student Blockades in Serbia: Street Revolution or Endless Chaos?

For days now, Serbia has been witnessing what looks like an urban revolution. But is this really a fight for justice or just chaos nobody can stop? Small groups of students and citizens are blocking intersections in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš, and over a dozen other cities across the country.

Where are the blockades happening?

In Belgrade, key traffic routes are blocked: King Alexander Boulevard near the Law Faculty, Roosevelt Street, the roundabout near Autokomanda, as well as intersections at Bežanijska Kosa, Batutova Street, Gandhi Street, Yuri Gagarin Street, and even near McDonald’s at Vidikovac. In Novi Sad, students have blocked intersections near Banovina, Freedom Bridge, Merkator, and Varadin Bridge. Similar scenes are seen in Kragujevac, Čačak, Kraljevo, Jagodina, Užice, Valjevo, Obrenovac, Pančevo, and other places.

Why the blockades?

It all started as a response to the arrests of students suspected of planning a violent change of the constitutional order and supporting those detained after the protests on June 28. Students decided to block faculties and intersections, and citizens joined in solidarity.

Authorities and university reactions

At the blockade near the Law Faculty, the Rector of the University of Belgrade, Vladan Đokić, addressed the crowd, but it did not stop the blockades. Traffic in many parts of the city is completely halted, and citizens are divided — some support the students, others are furious about the chaos and traffic jams.

What’s next?

The blockades have been going on for several days and are expected to continue. Traffic in major Serbian cities is in chaos, and the question is how long the authorities and students can keep up this cat-and-mouse game.

Conclusion

Are these blockades a sign that something is changing in Serbia, or just another proof that the country is stuck in a vicious cycle of protests and repression? One thing is clear — the streets have become a battlefield, and we are left watching who will give in first.

If you’re already stuck in traffic or maybe even on a blockade yourself, drop a comment below and tell us — is this a fight for a better future or just another chaos we’re all fed up with?
