Student Uprising at the Law Faculty: ‘Him or the University, Him or Serbia!’

Have you seen what’s happening in front of the Law Faculty in Belgrade? Students have raised their voices against brutal repression and police violence, culminating in a blockade of the intersection and a public address that echoed throughout Serbia. “Him or the university, him or us, him or Serbia!” these brave young people declare, refusing to stay silent while their rights and the university’s autonomy are trampled.

It all started when Law Faculty students organized a public address, clearly stating that repression against citizens is unacceptable and demanding elections. Lazar Bučevac, one of the students, openly condemned the police’s attempt to storm the faculty, emphasizing that educational institutions are no longer protected and police brutality has become routine.

Student Tijana Knežević emotionally described how students see the faculty as their home, a place where they sleep, eat, and socialize, and how an attack on the faculty is an attack on their home and family. It’s no wonder the students decided to block the intersection in front of the faculty, showing they won’t allow their basic rights to be taken away.

Professor Đorđe Čantrak from the Mechanical Engineering Faculty condemned the intrusion of unknown masked individuals into the faculty on June 20, calling it a direct violation of university autonomy. Anesthesiologist Vladimir Stefanović, who suffered beatings and spent nine days in custody, also called on the authorities to hold elections, stressing that the current regime is much craftier and more dangerous than Milošević’s.

This situation is not just about politics; it’s about rights, justice, and responsibility. Students and citizens of Serbia clearly state: “It’s not shameful to be arrested under Aleksandar Vučić’s regime!” University autonomy has been crossed, the Rubicon passed — elections are the only solution.

If you think this is just another student drama, think again. This is a fight for Serbia’s future, for justice and freedom. And you? Are you for “him or the university, him or Serbia” or will you stay silent while rights are trampled? Drop a comment, share your thoughts, or just have a laugh — but don’t stay indifferent!
