The Old Guard Sequel: Netflix Hit That Left Fans and Critics Furious

Netflix Disaster of the Year: The Old Guard 2 is a Total Flop!

After five long years, fans of action spectacles finally got the sequel to the cult hit The Old Guard. But instead of a triumphant return of the immortal warriors, we got a massive disappointment that left many furious and frustrated.

Top Views, Bottom Ratings

The Old Guard 2 immediately took the number one spot on Netflix’s most-watched list worldwide and in Croatia upon its release on July 2nd. But that’s where the good news ends. Critics almost unanimously slammed the film. On Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel has a disastrous 28% positive critic reviews and 44% audience score. For comparison, the first film scored an impressive 80% from critics and 71% from viewers.

What Went Wrong?

The story follows Andy (Charlize Theron) and her team of immortal warriors facing a new threat – Discord, the first immortal warrior played by Uma Thurman. Instead of protection, she brings revenge and destruction, exposing the immortal community. Despite promises of action and moral dilemmas, the script is shallow, characters underdeveloped, and fight scenes technically poor.

Critics Don’t Hold Back

Kevin Maher from The Times highlights technical flaws: bad lighting, awful echoing sound, and disastrous fight choreography. Caroline Siede from AV Club admits the film is still watchable because of the characters but fails to wrap up its themes. Benja Lee from The Guardian calls it a rushed and poorly told attempt to end the story, possibly marking the franchise’s end.

Audience is Brutal

Reddit comments are full of disappointment. One user said, “It was terrible, does anyone else think the sequel is a total flop? I was so excited, now I’m just lying in bed disappointed.” Others criticize the character Discord, saying she lacked depth despite being a great character and skilled swordswoman.

The Cast Tried, But…

Many sympathize with the actors, knowing they gave their all despite the poor material. Some even admitted they couldn’t finish the film due to the bad script, unconvincing acting, and choppy fight scenes.

Bottom Line: Views Don’t Equal Quality

Though The Old Guard 2 is currently Netflix’s most-watched film, it’s proof that high viewership doesn’t mean a good movie. The sequel disappointed most fans and critics and is hardly a worthy successor to the first film that breathed new life into the action genre.

If you loved the first film, you might watch the sequel out of curiosity or nostalgia, but most will agree it’s a big step backward. We’ll see if Netflix continues this franchise.

So, what do you think? Is The Old Guard 2 really that bad, or are critics just too harsh? Drop a comment, maybe together we’ll figure out if this is a cinematic disaster or just a bad day for immortal warriors!
