Scandal or Pride? Thompson’s Concert and the Controversial ‘Za dom spremni’ Salute Ignite New Firestorm

When half a million people gather at one concert, that’s no small deal. But when it’s about Marko Perković Thompson and his concert at the hippodrome, things get explosive! Croatian Minister Ivan Anušić didn’t hold back, calling it one of the biggest concerts ever held in Croatia, a country with just 3.8 million people. Yes, you read that right — half a million people singing together, and the atmosphere was electric.

But of course, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. The concert reopened old wounds and stirred controversy, especially around the salute “Za dom spremni.” Even though Croatia’s Constitutional Court declared this salute unconstitutional, Anušić claims it’s a symbol of struggle and pain from the toughest moments of the Croatian homeland, not Ustaše or NDH. “If someone thinks it’s a shame, then the shame is on Croatia,” the minister said.

Young people, kids, average age around 30, sang about homeland, faith, and heroes of the Homeland War. For Anušić, this proves the concert was a special event that united the nation in one voice. But is it really so? Critics argue such a gathering is dangerous as it can fuel nationalism and historical revisionism.

While politicians and journalists argue over words and meanings, half a million people were there, singing and feeling belonging. Is it a celebration of the past or playing with fire? You decide, but one thing’s for sure — this concert won’t be forgotten easily.

So, what about you? Are you for or against? Or maybe you have a hilarious take on all this? Drop it below, let’s see who’s got the wildest theory!
