Tito, JNA and UFOs: Secret Chases, Alien Autopsies, and Ancient Astronauts in Yugoslavia

Have you ever heard that Tito ordered a chase after a UFO? Or that the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) had encounters with aliens? And what about the frescoes in the Dečani monastery that allegedly depict spacecraft? These mysteries and legends have intrigued the public for decades and are now back in the spotlight.

UFO over Pula Airport and JNA Chase

On August 30, 1979, around 8 PM, an unidentified flying object (UFO) suddenly appeared hovering about 300 meters above Pula airport. Major Janda issued a general alert. The craft, about 300 meters long, made no sound. Several people ran to the platform expecting contact with the UFO crew, but shortly after, a missile was fired that exploded the object. The UFO then headed towards the Brijuni islands, stopping about 500 meters above Josip Broz Tito. Tito, informed of the event, refused to take shelter, believing he was not in danger. After several missiles were fired, the UFO retreated and disappeared towards Italy.

UFO Sightings in Montenegro and the Chase over Titograd

UFO sightings were not rare in Montenegro either, especially around Podgorica, where JNA pilots reported frequent sightings of glowing objects during night flights. Retired General-Pilot Zvonko Jurjević described how pilots chased mysterious crafts performing maneuvers impossible for any known aircraft. Colonel Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Kostić stated that General Ismet Kulenović declared an early alert and reported daily to Tito about these phenomena. However, official analyses tried to explain the sightings as meteorological phenomena, which meteorologists could not confirm.

Alien Autopsy at VMA: Truth or Hoax?

About 11 years ago, a video of an alleged alien autopsy at the Military Medical Academy (VMA) in Belgrade appeared on the internet. According to the legend, a disc-shaped craft crashed near the village of Otočec in Yugoslavia, and a partially burned alien body was transported to Belgrade where an autopsy was performed. The video showed doctors examining the body in detail. However, investigations revealed no official documents of such an autopsy, and the doctors in the video never worked at VMA. Italian Andrej Zoboli admitted the video was fake; he created an alien puppet and filmed the autopsy as a prank for skeptics.

Dečani Monastery Frescoes: Ancient Astronauts or Ordinary Symbols?

The frescoes in the 14th-century Dečani monastery depict angels in crafts resembling modern spacecraft. Some conspiracy theorists claim these are proof that aliens visited Earth in the past. Even Erich von Däniken, a famous author on ancient astronauts, called the frescoes fascinating. However, art historians explain these as common symbols of the sun, moon, and angels in medieval art, unrelated to aliens.

Conclusion: Mysteries That Still Intrigue

Although many UFO stories in Yugoslavia remain legends and unverified reports, they continue to spark curiosity and debate. Did Tito really order a chase after an unknown flying object? Did VMA keep alien secrets? Did our medieval artists depict space visitors? Answers may never be known, but the stories remain alive and ready to ignite new discussions.
