Tug of Mrduja: The Island Battle That Unites, Not Divides!

Every year, between two Dalmatian islands, Brač and Šolta, a spectacular and unique event takes place – the traditional tug of Mrduja. This event, held for the 16th time, is not just a sports competition but a true festival of culture, gastronomy, and community spirit. Mrduja, a small islet located exactly halfway between Milna on Brač and Stomorska on Šolta, becomes the arena for a tug-of-war contest that brings together locals and tourists in unmatched joy and unity.

This year, the event lasts three days, from July 17 to 19, with the highlight on Saturday, July 19, when boats from Milna and Stomorska compete for dominance in pulling the rope tied to Mrduja. Visitors can also enjoy a rich cultural and gastronomic program, including a culinary show featuring chefs from Mediterranean European regions. Food lovers will get to taste original dishes for free, such as orzo with herbal liqueur and mint, chicken tingul with figs, and game with cherry brandy – with 100 portions of each dish!

Ana Grassi, director of the Milna Tourist Board, emphasizes that the tug of Mrduja has become a symbol of island unity and humor. This year, new features include a children’s Mrduja, where kids will create a replica of the island and participate in their own tug-of-war from the shore. The goal is to involve children and foster the spirit of community from an early age.

Frane Lozić, mayor of Milna, highlights that Mrduja is a bridge between Brač and Šolta, symbolizing joint effort and connection among islanders, who are unfortunately becoming fewer. The event is a joint project of the municipalities of Milna and Šolta, the tourist boards of both islands, and the Split-Dalmatia County. The final celebration will be held in Stomorska with klapa singing and local gastronomy.

Although the tug-of-war competition is often intense, the winner has not changed so far – points are awarded based on the loudness of applause, the number of boats gathered, the time of pulling, and other fun criteria. This event is not just sport but a true celebration of Dalmatian spirit, culture, and community, attracting more visitors and tourists every year.

If you’re up for good fun, delicious food, and an authentic Dalmatian experience, Mrduja is the place not to miss! And if you’ve been there before, you know it’s an event that connects hearts and brings smiles. Who knows, maybe you’ll be the next to pull the rope and win the Mrduja champion title! And if you have a funny story from the event, feel free to share – we all love a good laugh and a great tale!
