Traffic Chaos in Montenegro: Roadworks, Closures, and Total Gridlock!

If you thought driving in Montenegro was easy and stress-free, think again! Roads across the country are in total chaos due to countless roadworks, closures, and complete blockades that will make you wonder if you actually started your journey or got stuck in an endless traffic nightmare.

Increased Traffic and Driver Advice The Auto-Moto Association of Montenegro (AMSCG) reports increased vehicle frequency, especially during the day. If you plan long trips, it’s better to start early in the morning or late in the afternoon, otherwise your journey will feel like an eternity. And don’t forget – frequent breaks are necessary because your nerves will be on edge.

Total Closures and Repairs at Critical Points On regional road R10, at the Sokolovina site near Đurđevića Tara, traffic is completely closed due to a rockfall. This critical point is under repair, but until the works are finished, no vehicles can pass.

On regional road R16 in Plužine, at the Virak section, traffic will be closed in three time slots during the day due to investment resurfacing works. A similar situation is on regional road R29 near Bar-Kamenički bridge-Krute, where traffic will be closed on June 30 in two time slots.

On main roads M2 and M3, traffic runs alternately on one lane due to works, and in some places is regulated by traffic lights. For example, on the Plužine-Jasenovo Polje section, traffic is slowed and difficult.

Bans for Heavy Vehicles and Buses From June 15 to September 15, heavy motor vehicles with a maximum allowed mass over 7.5 tons will not be allowed to travel on key main and regional roads in Montenegro during certain time intervals, especially in the evening hours. This includes main roads M1, M2, M10 and regional roads R1, R29, R25.

Also, buses, light and heavy, so-called vans and special passenger vehicles like campers, will be banned on certain sections of regional roads throughout the day from May 9 to September 15.

Protests and Additional Closures Due to protests in Cetinje, traffic will be closed on the main road from 17:20 to 20:30. This is just another reason to prepare for waiting and frustration.

Alternative Routes and Advice During closures, traffic will be redirected to alternative routes, but don’t expect it to be quick or easy. Traffic signs are set up, but jams are inevitable.

Why Does This Matter? Montenegro is a country with beautiful landscapes, but driving on its roads during this period can be a real nightmare. Works are necessary for safety, but poor coordination and a large number of simultaneous closures create chaos affecting all drivers.

If you’re already stuck in a queue or planning a trip, better arm yourself with patience and maybe a few jokes to pass the time faster. And if you have a hilarious story from Montenegrin roads, feel free to share it – maybe we all need a dose of laughter while waiting for traffic to normalize!

In any case, follow the rules, drive carefully, and remember – travel is an adventure, but it doesn’t have to be a test of patience!
