A 48-year-old Italian motorcyclist lost his life after trying to feed a bear with cubs, ignoring clear warning signs. Romania has the largest bear population in Europe, nearly 13,000 individuals, but the optimal number for nature in this region is four times less. Due to overpopulation and lack of food in the forests, bears have lost their fear of humans and increasingly come onto roads where tourists feed them and take selfies. The result? The death of one unfortunate Italian and injuries to other tourists. Forest rangers and gendarmes had to kill the bear and patrol the area, but tourists continue to risk their lives. A former Istrian environmentalist is calling for bears to be removed from the protected species list to regulate their numbers, as overpopulation leads to disaster.
