Trial for Hadi Matar’s attempted murder of Salman Rushdie begins.

The trial of Hadi Matar, accused of the attempted murder of writer Salman Rushdie, began with jury selection. Matar has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and second-degree assault. The trial is taking place in Mayville, New York. The district attorney estimates that jury selection will take up to two weeks. If convicted, Matar faces a sentence of up to 25 years in prison. He also faces federal charges for a terrorist act and support of Hezbollah, with a separate trial in Buffalo.
