President Donald Trump’s administration plans to eliminate the Department of Education through an executive order and legislation in Congress. This proposal is not new, but historically it has not received support in Congress. Trump has often criticized the Department as an example of federal overreach. Although some programs could be transferred to other agencies, eliminating the Department requires the cooperation of Congress, which has previously been difficult to achieve. Congress has often increased the Department’s budget despite proposals for its reduction.
