Ukraine on the Brink of Collapse: Does the West Really Want to Lose the War?
For 40 brutal months, Ukraine has been fighting against the Russian invader. Since Russia launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022, the Ukrainian people have faced relentless, devastating attacks. Tens of thousands have been killed or wounded, millions displaced, and the country’s infrastructure—factories, schools, hospitals, power plants, and fertile farmland—has been destroyed. Yet, despite being outnumbered and outgunned, Ukraine continues to fight.
Western Support Wavers
As Putin intensifies the war, terrorizing Kyiv and other cities nightly with record numbers of armed drones, American and European support is faltering. Western countries, led by Britain and France, struggle to supply Ukraine with the advanced weaponry it desperately needs. Germany plans to buy American Patriot missile systems but is simultaneously tripling its own defense spending.
Putin’s Coalition and Trump’s Game
Putin has assembled a coalition of willing partners—China, Iran, North Korea—supporting his war machine. The Western equivalent is stuck in a stalemate. Donald Trump, the former US president, complicates matters further with erratic policies. He has dismissed Ukraine’s need for weapons, proposed ceasefires and trade deals with Russia that have been rejected, and his actions seem driven by ego rather than principle. Putin instinctively sides with the stronger power, and Trump’s behavior only emboldens him.
What If Ukraine Falls?
Ukraine’s fall would be an epic strategic failure for the West, rivaling or exceeding the disasters of Afghanistan and Iraq. The consequences for Europe, Britain, the transatlantic alliance, and international law would be dire. Ukraine is exhausted, lacking manpower, ammunition, and missile interceptors. While there have been tactical successes, like destroying Russian strategic bombers deep inside Russia, the fundamental imbalance of power remains.
Options and a Call to Action
NATO and the West could take a firmer stance by establishing no-fly zones over parts of Ukraine not under Russian occupation and intercept incoming missiles and drones. The military logic is clear, and the legal and humanitarian arguments are undeniable. New sanctions on Russian oil exports should be imposed immediately, and billions of dollars held in Western banks belonging to the Kremlin should be seized and used to rebuild Ukraine.
Yet, many countries sit on the fence, like India, refusing sanctions and profiting from the war. Ukraine is at a tipping point, and the world watches. Will we let history repeat itself? Will the West allow Ukraine to fall? Or will we finally stand on the right side?
If you have thoughts on this or think something’s missing, drop a comment. Sometimes the best conversations start with a little outrage or a joke.
This is just the tip of the iceberg in the story of Ukraine and global politics. The war is not only on the battlefield but also in the minds of those who decide.
