Urgent Fix for Serbia’s Donor Shortage: Donor Cards Could Save Thousands of Lives

Imagine being on the waiting list for an organ transplant in Serbia. Over 1,000 people, including children, are waiting for a heart, liver, or kidney. But the number of donors is shrinking! In the first six months of this year, there were only 9 donors declared brain dead. This isn’t just statistics — these are lives! Olivera Milojević from Paraćin has been fighting for her life for nearly three decades. She has had two kidney transplants and has been on dialysis for nine years, now waiting for a third chance at a new life. Dialysis has become a daily battle, and every day on it is a lost day for mental and physical health. A similar story is that of Ivana Jović from Belgrade, who spent two years on dialysis before receiving a new kidney. But here’s the scary part: many people who might need a transplant aren’t even on the waiting list because they fear complicated preparations or don’t want to undergo dialysis. The donor shortage could be drastically reduced by reintroducing donor cards. Cardiologist Miljko Ristić explains that donor cards clearly express a person’s wish to be a donor, simplify the process, and provide families with security in tough times. If a person has a donor card, organs can be used more urgently because they can’t be stored for long. This is a chance to save lives and end the agony of waiting. Isn’t it time we all thought about this? If you have a donor card, carry it with you! And if you don’t, maybe it’s time to get one. Life is unpredictable, and your decision could be someone’s new chance. So, what do you think about organ donation? Would you sign a donor card? Drop a comment and let’s hear the voice of life!
