Vidovdan, Blockades, and Academic Chaos: Has Freedom Become Slavery?

Vidovdan has been a symbol of freedom and responsibility for centuries, but what about today? Vladan Petrov, a Constitutional Court judge and professor at the University of Belgrade’s Faculty of Law, doesn’t hold back: blockades and organized chaos must NOT become our everyday norm! At the Vidovdan awards ceremony, Petrov stressed that the true meaning of Vidovdan is a pledge of freedom and responsibility to the state and the people. But what we see today at universities is far from that. Since early December last year, classes and exams have become ghostly, with a small number of professors and students abusing academic autonomy for political goals. Academic life, which should revolve around teaching, exams, and students, has turned into a platform for political activism and quasi-autonomy. Petrov warns this situation leads to the loss of legal order and the identity of the nation. Will we allow organized chaos to overpower the rule of law? Or will we remember the true meaning of Vidovdan and take responsibility? If you care about Serbia’s future, it’s time to ask yourself — where are we headed? And you, what do you think about this academic chaos? Has freedom become slavery? Drop a comment, let’s hear some common sense or at least a good joke about blockades!
