Voluntary Blood Donation: Everyday Heroes or Forgotten Lifesavers?

Voluntary blood donation today is not just an act of kindness, but a true mission to save lives. At the Institute of Blood Transfusion of Serbia, located at Svetog Save 39, citizens can show their humanity every day — on weekdays from 7 AM to 7 PM, and on weekends and holidays from 8 AM to 3 PM. Every healthy adult, after a medical check-up and blood test, can become a donor and help someone in need.

But let’s be honest — how often do we really think about how precious blood is? While Aleksandar Kikanović, an ultramarathon runner from Loznica, runs 72 kilometers to raise money for the treatment of seven-year-old Danilo Petrović, many of us don’t even spare a minute to donate blood. Kikanović has already run thousands of kilometers for charity — from the Russian border to Corfu — and is now preparing for another marathon, because he knows every step matters for someone’s life.

Why is blood donation so important? Because blood cannot be manufactured in a lab. It is unique, and without it, there are no surgeries, no emergency interventions, no life. Yet, the number of donors stagnates while the demand grows. Blood transfusion institutes across Serbia daily appeal to citizens to respond, as one donor can save three lives.

Imagine this — while some struggle with their own problems, others run kilometers to help a stranger’s child. And you? Have you donated blood today? Or will you wait again until something forces you? Don’t let humanity become a luxury. Be part of the solution, not the problem.

And hey, if you have a funny or touching story about donating blood, or maybe an excuse why you haven’t become a donor yet, share it! Let’s hear from the brave and the hesitant. Maybe your story will inspire someone to change the world — or at least someone’s life.
