Volvo and Polestar to Produce New Electric SUV in Slovakia – Revolution or Just Another Green Myth?
The New Polestar 7 is Coming from Slovakia
Volvo and Polestar have signed an agreement to develop and produce the new Polestar 7, a premium electric compact SUV, at Volvo’s new factory in Košice, Slovakia. The model is planned to launch in 2024 as the second vehicle to be produced at this factory.
Technology and Design – Sounds Impressive, But…
The Polestar 7 will combine the recognizable Polestar design with technology shared with future Volvo models, including the EX60. It will use the latest technologies such as next-generation Cell-to-Body batteries and Volvo’s electric motors. Sharing components between brands creates economies of scale and increases efficiency.
Software and Production – Everything is Over-the-Air
The vehicle will use the Volvo Superset tech stack, a shared software platform with models EX90, ES90, EX60, and Polestar 3, enabling continuous improvements via over-the-air updates. The Košice factory will be Volvo’s third production unit in Europe, designed to be climate-neutral and focused exclusively on electric vehicles.
Slovakia as a New Hub for Electric Vehicle Production?
The location in Slovakia complements the European production triangle with factories in Ghent (Belgium) and Torslanda (Sweden). This collaboration supports the ambition of the Swedish-Chinese brand to become a fully electric manufacturer and achieve zero emissions by 2040.
But Is This Really the Future or Just Another Marketing Fairy Tale?
While Volvo and Polestar promise a green revolution, the automotive industry is full of examples where big words and plans remained only on paper. With growing competition, supply chain issues, and high production costs, it remains to be seen whether the Polestar 7 will be a hit or just another forgotten model.
