Vučić Opens the Toughest Section of Miloš Veliki Highway: Is This Really Serbia’s Safest Road?

Today, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić officially opened the toughest section of the E763 highway “Miloš Veliki” between Pakovraće and Požega, stretching 19.56 kilometers. Vučić proudly stated that this is the most difficult section ever built in Serbia, with numerous challenges and hardships faced by workers, but it was completed thanks to tremendous effort and persistence.

The Toughest Section in Serbia’s History

Vučić emphasized that this section was so demanding that no such difficult highway section had ever been built in Serbia before. During construction, they faced many problems, including the flooding of the Bjelica river and geological challenges that threatened the completion of the works. The Laz and Munjino Brdo tunnels, each about three kilometers long, are the two longest and most modern road tunnels in Serbia, with 24-hour monitoring and safety duty.

Safety First or Just Talk?

The president stated that the highway is completely safe and that all measures have been taken to ensure user safety. However, some media criticized the opening of the highway before all safety standards were met, which Vučić sharply rejected, accusing critics of hating their country and not wanting to celebrate its successes.

Free Ride and Future Plans

Vučić announced that citizens will be able to use this section for free starting July 15, which is an additional incentive to use the new road. He also announced the continuation of highway and expressway construction, including the Arilje-Ivanjica-Duga Poljana and Zlakusa-Mačkat-Zlatibor sections, further improving Serbia’s transport infrastructure.

A Massive Infrastructure Project

The Pakovraće-Požega section is part of the broader Preljina-Požega highway project, totaling 30.96 kilometers, which connects to the already built Miloš Veliki highway from Surčin to Preljina. The project includes 35 bridges, four overpasses, and grade-separated intersections, representing a massive infrastructure achievement for Serbia.

Reactions and Doubts

While Vučić celebrates success and progress, questions remain about how safe this section really is and whether all problems have been resolved. Is opening the highway before all standards are met just a political move or a real achievement? What do you think? Is this really Serbia’s safest highway or just another story for the public?
