Vučić in Seville: Serbia on the International Stage and Development Challenges
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić visited Seville on June 29 and 30 to participate in the 4th United Nations International Conference on Financing for Development. The event gathered leaders of countries and key stakeholders in sustainable development financing. Vučić addressed the participants, discussing the alignment of development agendas of the UN, international financial institutions, and other relevant actors.
During his stay in Spain, Vučić met with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and held several bilateral meetings with leaders of other countries. He also attended a dinner hosted by the Spanish royal couple, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.
This conference is a significant moment for Serbia as it seeks to position itself as a serious partner in global development and financing issues. Vučić emphasized the importance of cooperation with international institutions and the need for sustainable development that benefits Serbian citizens.
Alongside diplomatic activities, Serbia is currently facing issues such as rising fuel prices, announced increases in document and cigarette prices, and challenges with seasonal workers. The general director of Srbijagas, Dušan Bajatović, stated that a new gas contract with Russia will not be signed before September 20, further complicating the energy situation.
Vučić also announced a significant pension increase starting November 1, stressing that pensioners deserve it. He highlighted that Serbia has not stopped progressing and announced the opening of new infrastructure projects, such as the Pakovraće-Požega road section.
Overall, Vučić’s visit to Seville and participation in the international conference represent an important step in enhancing Serbia’s international reputation and engagement in global development issues, while simultaneously facing numerous domestic challenges.
