War on Crows: How Birds Destroyed Two Hectares of Watermelons and Agriculture in Odzaci

Just when you thought Serbian agriculture was safe, think again! Sava Kompalić Deronja, a successful watermelon grower from the Odzaci municipality, has lost two hectares of his crop – thanks to… crows! Yes, you read that right. Thousands of crows are daily ravaging the fields, destroying not only watermelons but also corn, sunflower, cabbage, peppers, and even irrigation systems. Sava, who has been successfully cultivating this vegetable crop for years and harvesting up to 80 tons per hectare, is now in shock. “The first harvest was taken by foreign crows,” he says, as the birds wreak havoc across the entire village. Scarecrows, cannons, people – nothing works. The crows have become real agricultural terrorists, and their habitat is the municipal landfill, which burns all summer. The birds flee the smoke and end up in the fields. Sava tried to scare them off by stretching threads across the fields, but the cunning predators do not dare to land where the threads are. The losses are huge, and the solution? Almost non-existent. On two hectares, the watermelons are completely destroyed, the fruits broken and unfortunately unusable. The experienced farmer says he has never seen such scenes even in the worst years. While farmers struggle with this problem, no effective solution is offered. Will the crows continue to ravage the fields? It seems so, because until the landfill problem is solved and a way to control the birds is found, agriculture in Odzaci is under attack. What do you think – are crows the new enemy of Serbian farmers? Or is it time to finally find a solution to this bird chaos? Share your thoughts, maybe your idea will save the crops!
