Wimbledon 2023: Serbian Tennis Stars Under Pressure, Nina Stojanović and Laslo Đere Out in First Round
Wimbledon 2023 brought real drama for Serbian tennis, but unfortunately not the kind we all hoped for. While Novak Djokovic successfully advanced to the second round, our other players did not share the same success. Nina Stojanović, one of our most promising female players, lost in the first round to Russian Ana Kalinskaya with a score of 2-0 in sets (6-3, 7-6).
Nina had a chance to take the first set, even leading 4-2, but failed to capitalize on her opportunities. Kalinskaya took two breaks and secured the set. The second set was a real battle, with breaks on both sides and a tiebreak where the Russian triumphed 7-4.
A similar fate befell Laslo Đere, who lost in five sets to Russian player Andrey Rublev. Đere missed the chance for a sensational comeback, losing a tight match 3-1 in sets (3-6, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 8-6). Rublev was better in key moments, saving three match points and eventually winning.
On the other hand, Novak Djokovic justified his favorite status and with some trouble passed to the second round, defeating Frenchman Alexander Muller 3-1 in sets (6-1, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2). Novak had stomach issues during the match but never considered quitting. His next opponent will be Brit Daniel Evans, known as a tough competitor on grass.
Clearly, Serbian tennis currently shows mixed results at Wimbledon. While Novak continues to dominate, our other players struggle to keep up with the competition. Is this a sign that we need a new generation or just a bad day on the court?
In any case, Wimbledon is always unpredictable, and this year it showed how hard it is to maintain top-level tennis. If you have your own opinion on these results, or maybe a funny comment about Nina’s breaks, feel free to drop it in the comments — let’s see who the real tennis expert is!
