Wimbledon in Chaos: Fines Flying Left and Right, and the French Lead the Shameful List!
Wimbledon, one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world, this year grabbed attention not only for top-notch matches but also for a flood of fines handed out to players! Yes, you read that right – players behaved so badly that organizers had to pull out their wallets and slap fines that could ruin many players’ budgets for the entire season.
Who’s the worst? The home player and the French!
At the top of the fined list is local player Henry Patten, who got hit with a whopping $12,000 fine! Yes, twelve grand for bad behavior on the court. Right behind him, as if competing for the worst, Frenchman Théo Arribagé paid $7,500, while his compatriot Adrian Mannarino got off with half that amount. Belgian Zizou Bergs and several players from Australia and the USA were fined between $2,000 and $4,000.
The French seem to have taken the shameful first place among the fined this year, which is quite embarrassing for a country known for elegance and style.
The ladies weren’t spared either, but Russians were the most disciplined
Among the women, the situation isn’t much better. Russian Elena Pridankina was mentioned for the first time in official tournament documents due to a $5,000 fine. Other ladies like Gračeva, Batiste, Kalinskaya, Pavlyuchenkova, and Anisimova received fines ranging from $2,000 to $4,000. Brazilian Nymeyer and French Pake ended up at the bottom of the list with fines of $2,500 and $2,000 respectively.
Interestingly, the Russian women were the least problematic, shedding new light on stereotypes about their temperament.
Why such big fines?
Fines were issued for various on-court offenses – from inappropriate behavior, swearing, to disturbing opponents and referees. Wimbledon is known for strict conduct rules, but it seems players decided to test the limits this year.
Even notorious troublemaker Nick Kyrgios wasn’t spared, though he wasn’t among the worst offenders.
What does this mean for tennis?
This wave of fines sends a clear message – rules must be followed, no matter how famous or talented you are. But is this over the top? Were players just playing a bit rough, or has Wimbledon become too strict?
While the tennis elite wrestles with cash penalties, the rest of us can only wonder – will next year’s Wimbledon see even more fines, or will players finally learn to behave?
