Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed that Ukraine acquire nuclear weapons after the war with Russia ends, if NATO membership is not quickly achievable. Ukraine inherited nuclear weapons following the fall of the Soviet Union but relinquished them in 1994. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine needs protection and support, including missile systems, and suggested forming a million-strong army with the help of partners. He has previously expressed a desire for NATO membership as a priority.
